After a stint in the Justice Department’s Office of Legal Counsel, Rehnquist was nominated to the U.S. Supreme Court at the age of forty-seven by President Richard M. Nixon and confirmed by the U.S. in a sixty-eight to twenty-six vote in 1972 to a seat vacated by Justice John Marshall Harlan. William Hubbs Rehnquist (/ ˈ r ɛ n k w ɪ s t / REN-kwist; October 1, 1924 – September 3, 2005) was an American lawyer and jurist who served on the Supreme Court of the United States for 33 years, as an associate justice from 1972 to 1986 and as Chief Justice from 1986 until his death in 2005. President Richard M. Nixon appointed William Rehnquist to the U.S. Supreme Court in 1971. Fifteen years later President Ronald Reagan named him as the court’s Chief Justice, a position that he held until his death in 2005. During the last eleven years of his term on the Court, there was not a single change in the roster of nine justices.
